The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) foundation awarded Latina singer Jennifer López with the 2013 Ally of Equality award for her contributions to the LGBT community.
At the award ceremony, celebrated last Saturday, October 5 in Washington to which more than 3,400 guests attended, the "Diva of the Bronx", was given the award for those who dedicate their time, energy, spirit and commitment to better the lives of the LGBT community, informed People en Español magazine.
At the event, Chad Griffin, president of the HRC commented that "Jennifer López represents the spirit of an ally of the LGBT community, and we're pleased to give her this award", quotes People.
At the award gala, which took place in the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, the Latina singer and actress was also honored for her support of marriage equality, AIDS research, anti-LGBT bullying and for her work as an executive producer on the ABC show, "The Fosters", reported The Wrap on its website.
The one-hour drama follows a multi-ethnic family of adoptive and biological children who have been educated by a lesbian couple played by Teri Polo and Sherri Saum.
According to the same source, the National Award of Equality of the Plaintiffs and Lawyers of Proposition 8 (the California referendum that eliminated the right of same-sex couples to get married) and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was also presented at the annual dinner of the HRC.
Jennifer López received the prestigious award from the hands of iconic activist and feminist Gloria Steinem, reported The Wrap.
