This weekend "Captain Phillips" opens nationwide.

The movie, which stars Tom Hanks, tells the true story of Capt. Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the U.S.-flagged MV Maersk Alabama.

The film recently opened the New York Film festival to rave reviews. It also garnered Hanks Oscar buzz for his lead role. The movie currently has 86 percent aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Alonso Duralde from the Wrap wrote, "The filmmakers are as interested in the human element as they are in the true events they're recounting. It's too bad that they couldn't have made their real-life bad guys as multi-dimensional as their hero."

Scott Foundas of Variety also liked the film and wrote, "At every step, Hanks excels at showing what's really going on in the character's mind while maintaining his facade of almost folksy calm. It isn't one of the actor's rangiest roles, but it culminates in an eruption of emotional fireworks ..."

The Hollywood Reporter's Todd McCarthy wrote, "Paul Greengrass and Tom Hanks team up for a pulsating account of the kidnapping of the captain of an American cargo ship by Somali pirates."

Rodrigo Perez from the Playlist gave the movie an A and wrote, "The white-knuckled immediacy Greengrass delivers to every scene is transportive, dropping you like a passenger, gagged and bound, into this extremely volatile situation. The fear, panic and emotional pain every character endures is utterly tangible."

Latinos Post wrote, "Paul Greengrass and Tom Hanks Deliver One of the Most Visceral Film Experiences of the Year."

The movie also stars Catherin Keener and Barkhad Abdi. Columbia/Sony will release the movie 3,000 theaters. "Captain Phillips" is rated PG-13 for sustained intense sequences of menace, some violence with bloody images and for substance use.
