The New Jersey Devils and Edmonton Oilers will look to win their first game of the season when they face off on Monday.
Both teams have gotten off to difficult starts. The Devils opened their season on Thursday and were shutout 3-0 by the Pittsburgh Penguins. On Friday they played their home opener against the New York Islanders and blew two leads en route to a 4-3 shootout defeat. Martin Brodeur started the Friday game while Corey Schneider got to work against the Penguins.
"Obviously, [it's] disappointing getting one out of four points," Schneider said, according to NHL.com. He noted that the team did play well in both games. "Our effort level both nights was pretty good. Whether it was me making a couple more saves on the first night or not being able to get that go-ahead goal and hang onto to it [against the Islanders on Friday], we all feel we can be better. We're going to have to be."
The Devils managed one point, but the Oilers have not even gotten that much through their opening two games. On Tuesday, the team blew a 4-2 lead against the Winnipeg Jets and lost 5-4. On Saturday, the Oilers were blitzed 6-2 by the Vancouver Canucks.
"Part of the message to the players this morning was they are greatly confusing me," Coach Dallas Eakins said about his team's performance, according to NHL.com. "I can show them clips where we have no compete level at all and then I show them clips where our compete level is way more than I even expect -- and out of the same people."
Prediction: New Jersey Devils win 2-1.
