Heartbreak is a staple of our everyday lives. Although some may be worse than other, sucking your soul from the deep corners of your heart, we experience bits of heartbreak everyday. Whether the deli got your lunch order wrong or your office crush calls out sick. We’ve become numb to it. We expect it. It’s life. So while devastating, the recent news concerning Laura Prepon and her role on “Orange Is the New Black” doesn’t come as much surprise.

The actress, who plays Alex, Piper’s co-defendant and lesbian inmate flame, will not fulfill a recurring role in the upcoming second season of the Netflix hit series. In fact, she’ll only appear in one episode, where she’ll wrap up her character arc accordingly.

But don’t fret. To every end there’s a new beginning. In this case, there’s a generous handful of new beginnings. Although the first season had a heavy emphasis on Piper and her adjustment to life in prison, Season 2 will divide its focus evenly across the board, giving every character a chance to shine, TV Guide reports.

"It's becoming much more of an ensemble," Jenji Kohan said at Wednesday’s PaleyFest in New York. "As much as I love Piper and Taylor and her journey, I think people are interested in everybody's journey."

And the show won’t stop there. "Knock on wood, if there's a Season 3, we're really talking about focusing in on the guards more then," Kohan added.

Not to be discouraged, Piper fans. There’s still plenty more of the witty and grounded bombshell in Season 2. Now that she’s without Larry or Alex, she’ll struggle to find her bearings, and while she struggles on the inside (pun intended), so will Larry on the outside.

"He loves Piper, but he doesn't really know where to go from there," said Jason Biggs, who plays Larry on the show.. "So beginning of Season 2 and throughout we're going to see or at least explore if the damage that was done is irreparable or if they can work through this."

“Orange Is the New Black” will return to Netflix sometime in early 2014.
