Jacksonville International Airport had to be evacuated Monday after authorities located two suspicious packages and received a threat from a man who said he had a bomb.
The evacuation affected hundreds of people after a package was located in a terminal, and another in the parking lot, said Jacksonville International Airport spokesman Michael Stewart, according to report from the Florida Times-Union, quoted by Mexican newspaper Excélsior.
Although the information has not been corroborated, a witness told the Times-Union he saw how authorities arrested at least two men, one inside the terminal and one outside.
The FBI, port police and a bomb squad arrived at the Airport, according to Excélsior.
According to the same source, Stewart offered a press conference at 7:30 a.m. EST local time, in which he told the media that the terminal had been evacuated and closed due to the possible presence of a bomb. "There's an ongoing investigation", said Stewart without going into details.
All airport activities were suspended, declared airport authorities.
Univisión reported that local authorities have released details of the incident, which happened when a man was spotted carrying a suspicious package and the man assured it was a bomb.
As a result of this situation, passengers and crew were ordered to evacuate the planes on the runway, with the purpose of being better able to evaluate the situation that led to the location of two suspicious objects in the airport's perimeter.
"Due to Police activity regarding the suspicious package, JAX airport has been evacuated. Consult your airline for updates on your flight," reads a tweet sent by airport security police.
