The comeback fight of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was more difficult than expected as Brandon Vera outhustled the Mexican boxer in their 10-round showdown on Saturday in Carson, California.
Vera was the more aggressive fighter in their showdown, while Chavez had more powerful punches that connected, but the fight was tainted with controversies due to the winning margin of Chavez.
The scorecards read 98-92, 97-93, and 96-94 in favor of Chavez, who fought for the first time since losing to Sergio Martinez in September last year.
After the fight, Chavez Jr. was asked if he felt the absence of former trainer Freddie Roach and conditioning coach Alex Ariza in his corner. The 27-year-old Mexican said that the absence of his former trainer and coach was not a factor, but he revealed that he is planning to rehire Roach in his next fight.
"I don't think so, you know? I think Freddie Roach is a great trainer. Probably for my next fight, I'm going to hire him, to train with him. Of course he's a great trainer," Chavez Jr said in an interview with Boxingscene.
In the same interview, the flamboyant Mexican also had some words for his critics, particularly to those who said that Vera should have won because the 31-year-old American threw more punches. Chavez Jr. admitted that he threw less punches, reasoning out that his aching right hand affected his performance.
"Of course what happened is I threw less punches than I was used to throwing. And when I hurt him with the left hook [in the tenth round], I couldn't finish him because I couldn't throw my right hand. I was always in control of the fight I really believe I didn't knock him out because I hurt my hand in the fourth round," Chavez Jr said.
As for his next opponent, the son of Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. said that he is open to fighting anyone regardless of the catch weight, despite having difficulties in hitting the catch weight in the Vera bout.
