J.J. Abrams will use IMAX for his upcoming film "Star Wars: Episode VII."
According to Ain't It Cool news, IMAX chief executive officer Richard Gelfond has said that he is talking to Abrams about the possibility. He said, "We are talking to [director] JJ Abrams' [team] now about the next Star Wars being used with partly Imax cameras."
IMAX cameras were first used in a major blockbuster when Christopher Nolan shot some of "The Dark Knight" in the format. The IMAX format creates footage with greater clarity, and produces images of far greater size and resolution than conventional film systems.
Abrams recently used the format for several sections of his latest film "Star Trek Into Darkness," and it will be featured in the upcoming Hunger Games sequel "Catching Fire." Nolan will also use the format on his newest feature "Interstellar," which is set to star Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain.
Abrams recently announced that he would shoot the upcoming installment on film instead of the digital format, which Geroge Lucas introduced for "Episode II" and "Episode III."
"Star Wars: Episode VII" is currently in pre-prodution with Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) and Harrison (Han Solo) rumored to reprise their roles.
Additionally, Benedict Cumberbatch and Saoire Ronan are also rumored to have been cast in the film alongside David Oyelowo. However, casting has not been confirmed.
The movie is set to begin production in 2014 in the U.K. and will be released in 2015.
