Dwight Howard believes his best chance of winning a championship was not with the Los Angeles Lakers, but with his current team, the Houston Rockets. The All-Star center said during the Rockets' media day to kick off their training camp on Friday.
Howard, who drew a barrage of criticism from Lakers fans after deciding to leave the proud franchise for a chance to team up with James Harden and company in Houston, rubbed more salt on the wound after saying that he would have zero chance of getting a title if he stays in Los Angeles.
"The biggest part was leaving a storied franchise and also leaving a lot of money on the table, but in order to win you've got to sacrifice something. It would have been great to have that stuff, the money and all that stuff, but I want to win," said Howard in an interview with CSN Houston.com via NBC Sports.
Howard, who won three Defensive Player of the Year awards during his tenure with the Orlando Magic, also talked about the possibility of playing with another excellent rim protector in Omer Asik at the same time on the floor.
"With me and Omer, we have an opportunity to really mess up a lot of teams on the defensive end because of our presence," Howard told USA Today. "He's a very big guy. When we're playing together, it will give me a chance to roll around and block a lot of shots and be who I am on defense."
Rockets head coach Kevin McHale also tackled the chances of playing Howard at the power forward position while Asik manning the shaded lane as the center.
"They'll determine how much (they play together)," McHale said of Howard and Asik. "If it works really well, it'll be a lot. If it looks like crap, it won't be much. We're going to find out. But we're going to give it every opportunity to work," said McHale.
