Juan Manuel Marquez announced that he would consider retirement after his upcoming showdown with Timothy Bradley on Oct. 12th at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
Marquez, who recently turned 40 years old, said that the possibility of hanging up his gloves for good is not out of the picture even if he wins against Bradley in their World Boxing Organization welterweight title showdown.
The 40-year-old Mexican warrior added that the decision will be based on how his body will react in his upcoming bout in which he is looking to win his fifth world title in five different weight divisions.
"Retirement is a possibility. I won't rule anything out right now. First things first, we have to see how I feel physically, which is a very important factor and then see what happens. Bradley can say whatever he wants, but saying he will retire me and doing it are two different things. Anything can happen in the ring. We will allow him to keep talking, but I will let my fists do the talking," Marquez said in an interview with Boxingscene.
Marquez's announcement could completely throw Manny Pacquiao out of the picture despite the growing calls for a fifth fight between the two boxing warriors.
In an interview with World Boxing News, Marquez, who knocked out Pacquiao in the sixth round of their last bout in December, said that he is thinking of winning his fifth title in five divisions and not about his Filipino rival.
"Tim Bradley has the belt. I want it more than ever. I also felt that the fans wanted to see something new. The first two fights Pacquiao were very close, the third I won easily and in the fourth I knocked him out cold, so as far as I am concerned, we are done with Pacquiao," Marquez said.
The Marquez vs Bradley showdown will be shown live on Showtime PPV on Oct. 12th.
