The Oscar race has taken another turn as Sony has announced that Bennet Miller's "Foxcatcher" will be delayed until 2014.
The company sent out a statement on Thursday, Sept. 26 stating that the film would no longer open the 2013 AFI Film Festival Nov. 8 and that it would not be released on Dec. 20. The company said that it supported "the decision of the filmmakers to allow for more time to finish the film."
The news certainly comes as a surprise. Many Oscar prognosticators had the film as a potential Best Picture winner and even had Steve Carell as a potential Best Actor winner.
The news also came a few hours after the company released a teaser trailer, which it immediately pulled down due to the delay announcement.
The delay of "Foxcatcher" is the second for a possible major Oscar contender. The Weinstein Company announced earlier this week that it was delaying the Nicole Kidman starrer "Grace of Monaco." The announcement was also a major surprise because the company had already previewed the movie in May at the Cannes Film Festival and Harvey Weinstein said he was very excited about it.
Other titles that are rumored to be delayed include James Gray's "The Immigrant." That film was once seen as the perfect movie to get Marion Cotillard her second Oscar nomination. However, TWC has failed to announce a release date and even skipped the Toronto, Venice and Telluride Film Festivals. The film is set to play at the New York Film Festival, but given the lack of buzz, it is likely the film will come out in 2014.
Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" is also rumored to be delayed, but nothing has been confirmed.
While "Foxcatcher" could have been a great Oscar contender, Sony Classics still has an immense slate that includes "Kill Your Darlings," "Wadjda," "Blue Jasmine," "Only Lovers Left Alive," "The Invisible Woman," "Before Midnight" and "The Past."
