The second episode of season three of "New Girl," titled "Nerd," featured the show's signature endearing quirkiness mixed with a bit chaos.
Schmidt's (Max Greenfield) love triangle continued with Cece (Hannah Simone) and Elizabeth (Merritt Wever). Cece fits perfectly with the lifestyle he wants for himself, yet Elizabeth has made him feel comfortable about his past. The love triangle storyline has definitely been seen countless times, so hopefully this story arc will move farther along in future episodes.
Nick (Jake Johnson) and Jess' (Zooey Deschanel) romance continues, but their old friendship remains intact. Jess meets a bunch of pretty wild teachers at her new job, including Dreama Walker from "Don't Trust the B-- in Apartment 23." The new teachers are the typical "wrong crowd" types, and Nick steps into try to stop her from becoming a part of their group.
Winston (Lamorne Morris) arguably had the biggest issue this past episode. Viewers know that Winston is an oddball, but the last episode nearly brought him to the verge of sociopath. At one point, Winston held a shovel over his girlfriend's cat's head, about to strike, in revenge for his girlfriend's cheating. Luckily, he decided to let the feline enjoy another one of its nine lives.
As for future episodes, TVLine reports that the Halloween episode is sure to be a must-see. Jess will throw a Halloween party at the loft, and will try to cheer up a gloomy Schmidt by using a ploy involving his childhood idol, Michael Keaton.
Additionally, Nick and Jess will encounter some bumps in the road, such as issues stemming from Nick's unstable career.
This season will also feature the debut of Jess' sister in early 2014. Co-producer Brett Baer told TVLine said that her sister will "add a depth charge in the fabric of the loft."
Viewers will also be getting acquainted with Schmidt's (Max Greenfield) family in season three.
Schmidt will have a bit of trouble with his love life next season, which will prompt some soul-searching.
Baer said, "He's definitely on a journey to figure himself out this season. He's going to be forced to confront himself, and get in touch with the little guy inside of him." While on his personal journey, viewers will meet some of his family members, who will appear in the second half of the season. "You'll get a vision of what his childhood and homelife were like growing up, the way we did with Nick last year," Baer confirmed.
Damon Wayans Jr. will also reemerge soon to reprise his role as Coach, a character he played in the show's pilot. At the time, Wayans could not appear on the rest of the season because of his commitment to "Happy Endings," which was recently canceled.
