"Grace of Monaco" will be delayed until 2014.
The Hollywood Reporter announced that the Weinstein Company was moving the Nicole Kidman film to the spring of 2014 to allow more time for editing. However, the company did not comment further on the sudden date switch.
The move does not seem to be a big surprise given the lack of marketing, publicity or festival attention the film had received. Usually when the Weinstein Company acquires a film and releases it in time for awards, the company gives it a huge marketing push. However, that was not the case with "Grace." A trailer was released two weeks ago, but pundits believed that it was lackluster and even resembled the trailer for "Diana."
The film is now slated for a spring release making it an improbable awards contender. Weinstein already has a number of films scheduled for release next year including Saul Dibb's "Suite Francaise" and several of its Toronto purchases. Those films are "The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby His or Her," "The Railway Man" and "Can a Love Song Save Your Life?" The company has also announced that it will move the release of "The Immigrant" to 2014 as well.
The Weinstein Company already has a crowded lineup this year that includes Hong Kong's Academy selection "The Grandmaster," Sundance winner "Fruitvale Station,' "Lee Daniel's The Butler" and "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom." The company is also backing "Philomena," "One Chance" and "August: Osage County."
"Grace of Monaco" tells the story of former Hollywood star Grace Kelly's crisis of marriage and identity during a political dispute between Monaco's Prince Rainier III and France's Charles De Gaulle. The movie was directed by Oliver Dahan ("La Vie en Rose") and also stars Tim Roth, Paz Vega, Derek Jacobi and Frank Langella.
