"Behind the Candelabra," "Modern Family" and "Breaking Bad" took home the top prizes at the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards.
The Outstanding Comedy Series award went to "Modern Family." In the other Comedy Series categories, Jim Parsons took home the award for Outstanding Lead Actor for his turn in "The Big Bang Theory." Julia Louis-Dreyfus snagged the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her work in "Veep," while Tony Hale's performance in "Veep" netted him the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. The Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series was given to Merritt Wever for her performance in "Nurse Jackie." Tina Fey's hit series "30 Rock" continued to shine as it won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. Gail Mancuso picked up the Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series for her work on "Modern Family;" she was also nominated for the award in 2011, but failed to win.
The Outstanding Drama Series award went to "Breaking Bad." In other Drama Series races, Jeff Daniels picked up his first Emmy victory for his performance as Will McAvoy in "The Newsroom"; Daniels had never been nominated for an Emmy prior to this year. Bobby Cannavale picked up his second Emmy victory for his supporting role as Gyp Rosetti in "Boardwalk Empire;" he previously won in 2005 for his work on "Will & Grace." The Supporting Actress award went to Anna Gunn for her turn in "Breaking Bad"; she was also nominated for her first-ever Emmy last year for the same role, but did not win. "Homeland's" Henry Bromell picked up his second straight Emmy for the series; while his victory in 2012 was for Outstanding Drama Series, this year's win was for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series. David Fincher was given the Best Directing Emmy for his work on "House of Cards." Claire Danes continued to dominate for her performance in "Homeland," winning the Outstanding Lead Actress award; she won the award in 2012 and has also won two Golden Globes for her work on "Homeland."
In the Miniseries and Movie categories, Steven Soderbergh's "Behind the Candelabra" took home 11 total Emmys including Best Director and Best Lead Actor for Michael Douglas. Laura Linney took home the Lead Actress award for her work on "The Big C," while Abi Morgan picked up the writing award for the category for her work on "The Hour." James Cromwell was given the Outstanding Supporting Actor accolade for his performance on "American Horror Story." "Political Animals" star Ellen Burstyn won the Outstanding Supporting Actress accolade for her work in the miniseries and Michael Douglas picked up the Outstanding Lead Actor prize for his turn in "Behind the Candelabra."
Other award winners included "The Colbert Report" (Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series) and "The Voice" (Outstanding Reality Competition Program).
