In 2008, it was Jamaica's Nesta Carter, Michael Frater, Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell who not only earned the gold medal for the men's 4x100 meter relay but also established a new world record with 37.10 seconds.
Today in London, Jamaica will most likely take the gold again and they also have a good chance of breaking the world record - 37.04 seconds - they themselves established last year in Daegu, South Korea.
Jamaica officially has the two fastest men in the world for the 100 meters and the three fastest men in the world for the 200 meter event with Bolt, Blake and Weir who placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd on Thursday. If anything, these results should have great weight on the final outcome for today's 4x100 final.
4x100m Schedule:
Men's 4x100-meter Relay Final: - August 11, 4:00 p.m. EDT / 9:00 p.m. London
Line-Ups
To be announced soon but most likely:
Jamaica: Yohan Blake, Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell
USA: Tyson Gay, Justin Gatlin, Ryan Bailey
During round 1 of the 4x100 meter relay, USA clocked the best time edging Jamaica by one hundredth of a second, 37.38 to 37.39, but Bolt did not run in it and also well known it is that sprinters save the best for the final, just like in swimming.
Thus Jamaica will be hunting for the gold tonight and further cement itself as the already dominant force in men's short distance events. Usain Bolt on the other hand will have the opportunity to finish his Olympic participation with three gold around his neck and give the island of Jamaica another good reason to party.
