The top 30 golfers face off today as the PGA Tour Championship, the last tournament of the golf season, kicks off at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga., with a $10 million prize and the tour championship on the line.
The PGA Tour Championship is the culmination of the FedEx Cup four-tournament playoff series that began with the Barclays Championship, followed by the Deutsche Bank Championship, and last week's BMW Championship. The FedEx Cup uses the world rankings to determine the invitations for their four-tournament playoff. The winner of the FedEx Cup has won the Tour Championship four out of the last seven years.
"Two trophies here this week, and also potentially throwing my name in a player of the year debate, which I think is quite a prestigious honor amongst the company that I play golf against," said 2013 Masters champion Adam Scott - who currently sits in third place in the FedEx Cup standings and a 12-to-1 favorite for this weekend's tournament.
Points are reset so that the top five players only have to win this weekend's event to win the FedEx Cup. The rest of the field has a mathematical chance to win the tournament but face greater odds. Only two players - Jim Furyk in 2010 and Bill Hass in 2011 - have won the FedEx starting out of the top 10.
Currently, Tiger Woods is the top-ranked player, followed by Deutsche Bank Championship winner Henrik Stenson, Scott, BMW Championship winner Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar - who has yet to win a playoff event but is ranked fifth in the world.
This is the third time Woods goes into the Tour Championship as the top seed, having won the FedEx Cup the last two times he went in ranked number one. Tiger Woods is the 5-to-1 favorite to win, according to LVH SuperBook, at the East Lake Golf Club, having win the event five times in his career.
"Winning five times this year has been pretty good," said Woods. "I think I've had a good run here. I've won twice and finished second four times. That's not too bad over the course of my career here."
