A day earlier, USA was still trailing China in the count but important victories in Women's Soccer and Women's Water Polo lifted the red, white and blue-flagged-nation past the Chinese for total gold medals while three silver medals and one bronze medal helped it overcome the total overall medals count as well.
For China, Thursday did not result as favorable compared to the Americans but they were able to snatch a gold in diving, and two silvers in boxing and taekwondo.

By 12:00 p.m. EDT Friday, China had secured one more silver in Synchronized Swimming (lost to Russia) to come in 9 medals away from USA who by then had not scooped up any medals for the day.
