The San Jose Earthquakes will look to salvage their CONCACAF Champions League tournament when they take on the Montreal Impact on Tuesday.
San Jose enters the game with zero points in two matches and is slowly running out of time to get out of the group stage. The Earthquakes opened the tournament with a 1-0 loss in Montreal followed by a 1-0 loss at Heredia. Heredia, the top team in the group, has six points through two games and could eliminate San Jose with a draw in its next match. However, San Jose could be eliminated from contention as soon as Tuesday if it loses or draws against Montreal.
There has been some speculation about whether Montreal would use all of its veterans in the tilt following a double-header Saturday, but all indications point to the team's top players being in California to prepare for the match.
"We knew that both games were important," Montreal assistant coach Mauro Biello said, according to Major League Soccer's official website. "We're going to approach them the same and try to pick up points. We couldn't on Saturday, but we're getting ready to field the team that will help up grab points against San Jose."
"Whether they put their starters or reserves out there, everyone wants to win the game," Biello added. "They do nothing in order to lose. We have to be ready. It depends on us, on how we want to win the game. They decide who plays, but we have to pick up points."
Montreal sits in second place with three points and could still win the group and qualify for the knockout rounds if it manages to win its final two games of the group stage.
Prediction: San Jose manages a 1-0 win at home.
