It’s typical for a successful television series to get its own spin-off. Networks want to milk each success for every dollar that they’re worth. Understandable. These spin-off series generally succeed, at least for a season or two, but rarely reach the level of success their predecessors. AMC recently appointed its hit series “Breaking Bad” a spin-off series featuring Saul Goodman, and now it’s “The Walking Dead’s” turn.
AMC announced on Monday that is is in the early stages of developing a “companion series” to “The Walking Dead” that’s set to debut in 2015, TVLine reports. Series creator Robert Kirkman will hop on as executive producer alongside Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert, both of which both work as executive producers on “The Walking Dead.”
“Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer,” said AMC president Charlie Collier. “We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”
Kirkman has had his hand in “The Walking Dead” TV series since the beginning, but although he loves working on the series, he couldn’t be more excited to work on a new project that itsn’t bound to the successful comic series. “After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of ‘The Walking Dead’ universe,” Kirkman said. “The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”
“The Walking Dead” returns to AMC October 13. It’s spin-off, 2015.
