Two gunmen, one dressed in black and another dressed in fatigues, opened fire on Monday at 8:20 a.m. EST inside the U.S. Navy Yard in Washington D.C., killing four people and wounding 12, according to the Washington Post. The shots were fired at the Naval Sea Systems Command's headquarters, where 3,000 currently work.
The U.S. Navy tweeted there are "several confirmed injuries with reports of fatalities." The four fatalities were recently confirmed.
Two of the injured include a Washington D.C. police officer who has been taken to the hospital, and a law officer who is not affiliated with the D.C. police force, according to Chris Kelly, the spokesman for the Metropolitan Police Department.
Emergency personnel are still on the scene and a "shelter in place" order has been issued for all Navy Yard personnel, the Navy reports.
Emergency responders, the FBI, U.S. Capitol Police and local D.C. police responded to the shooting. Traffic was shut down in the area, and some people are being evacuated while others are sheltering in place.
Six D.C. area schools are currently on lockdown: Amidon-Bowen Elementary, Brent Elementary School, Eastern High School, Eliot-Hine Middle School, Jefferson Academy, Tyler Elementary School and Van Ness Administrative Building.
Air traffic to Reagan National Airport in northern Virginia was suspended but later resumed, according to CNN.
President Barack Obama has been briefed on the situation, according to a White House statement.
