Are Captain America and Iron Man the main characters in the upcoming "Avengers: Age of Ultron?" Recent comments made by Marvel Studios Co-President Louis D'Esposito seem indicate that this is the case.

D'Esposito stated that the two characters would be "leading" the Avengers in the hotly anticipated sequel.

"Well, [Tony Stark is] leading the team with Captain America and ... I don't know where he's at 100 percent," D'Esposito said, according to Stack.com. "We're still developing the screenplay, and Joss Whedon is writing furiously to get that finished, but obviously I've seen a couple of drafts."

The status of Iron Man in the film has been a major question as actor Robert Downey Jr. has previously expressed an interest in leaving the franchise. In the most recent film "Iron Man 3" the super hero got rid of his reactor core in order to live a more peaceful life along his girlfriend Pepper Potts. However, D'Esposito hinted that Tony Stark would be unable to live a long time without the thrills of being Iron Man.

"It's hard for me to say at this point what he is doing and what his emotional mindset is, but you can see where it was at the end of Iron Man 3," he added. "He's in love with Pepper, he's made a grand gesture to blow up the suit at that point, but at the end he couldn't help himself. I think he will go back to tinkering-that's what he does."

The first "Avengers" movie split time between its major protagonists, but a more focused view could help cater to the more popular heroes of the group. Iron Man's films have always been the most successful from a financial standpoint when compared to "Thor" and "Captain America." Making Captain America one of the leads could be a hint that Chris Evans may be donning the suit for a number of other films for Marvel.

Of course, D'Esposito's comments could simply mean that narratively the two characters were given the leadership of the group and there may be no intention of giving any particular Avenger more screentime or development than his colleagues.

"Avengers: Age of Ultron is slated for release on May 1, 2015.
