Miss New York Nina Davuluri won the 2014 Miss America Beauty Pageant. But who is she?
Davuluri, 24, is the second straight winner from the Empire State and hails from Syracuse. According to the official Miss America website, she attended St. Joseph High School and went to college at the University of Michigan. Davuluri's career ambition is to become a physician and her main platform issue in the competition was to celebrate diversity through cultural competency.
During the competition, she showcased her talent of Bollywood Fusion dance; however, she endured a bit of embarrassment prior to the performance. As her name was called out to showcase her talent, the camera dollied over to her position. She remained seated, almost oblivious to the situation. After a few more calls Davuluri realized that she was up, immediately got out of her seat and rushed to the stage to showcase her dancing skills.
According to the New York Post, Davuluri endured a great deal of weight problems throughout her life. She infamously called last year's Miss America (and also Miss New York) Mallory Hagan "fat as [expletive]." However, the Post noted that she battled bulimia and recently lost 53 pounds in just a few years.
"Nina is probably more beautiful on the inside than she is on the outside," Davuluri's personal trainer Tia Falcone said in the same report by the NY Post. "She had to really work hard to get to where she is. It makes you more humble."
"I wanted her down to 18 percent body fat and 117 pounds," Falcone elaborated. "She met that goal, and that's where she still is now."
