The final countdown to Drake’s junior album has begun. In the past, the singer/rapper has defined the aesthetic of an entire season. With his Grammy winning efforts on Take Care, he set the soundtrack for the cold months to come. Autumn is his time, and he knows it. Even his label is appropriately named “October’s Very Own.” Within a months time, the tone of the impending fall and winter will be set in stone by one of rap’s most celebrated, loved, and yes, hated on, artists of our generation.

On Take Care, Drake exposed his sensitive side by singing about his difficulties coping with his rise to fame and the anguish of relationships lost along the way. However, his most recent music reflects a more narcissistic Drake. He repeatedly praises his own achievements and credits no one but himself. He's unbeatable, he has everything anyone could ever desire and he wants the world to know.

There is no problem with changing the encompassing theme of your music from album to album, but you run the risk of losing fans that like you for who you used to be. People fell in love with the broken and distraught Drake who would drunk dial and ex after too many drinks, ranting about the dark facade of success and deep rooted love. As the singer continues to roll out new music in anticipation of his upcoming album Nothing Was the Same, fans can only hope that Drake will open up and expose his other layers.

And they’re getting their wish. On his most recent released single, “Hold On We’re Going Home,” Drake taps into his old self, singing about a woman that he adores despite the façade she wears while in his presence. The catchy melodies and simple drop beat rhythm is reminiscent of “Find Your Love” from his freshman album, Thank Me Later. It’s the blessing. Sounds of the old Drake come as music to the ears, pun intended.

And it doesn’t stop there. Drake appeared on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” on Thursday to debut his new song “Too Much” with Sampha. “Before I do this song, I just want to say to my friends and family, I want the best for everybody and I love you all,” he said before the performance. Drake raps over an ambient yet tight beat as he shares his thoughts on the past several years. From money to family to women, Drake covers all the bases. Although slivers of his ego shine through, he returns to the follies of fame and fortune, much like on Take Care. Check out the performance for yourself below.

We’re now less than two weeks away from the unveiling of Nothing Was the Same. It’s time to put on your Drake playlists, retrace the steps he’s covered and look forward to what’s next.
