Costa Rica is not generally noticed as one of the major film producers of Costa Rica. However, "Por las Plumas," directed by Costa Rica's own Ernesto Villalobos is making appearances around major film festivals this season.
The film is currently making the rounds at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and is slated to screen at the notable Vancouver Film Festival in the "Cinema of our Time" section.
"I am very happy about returning to Canada; I don't know if there is competition or awards in the section. I haven't really had time to check out the full details because I am completely booked with Toronto," said Villalobos according to La Nacion Ocio. "What I do know is that the category is a good one. The organizers in Vancouver have been incredibly professional."
"A security guard who wants to get into the cockfighting game buys, befriends, and becomes inseparable from his rooster protégé Rocky, in this winsome feature debut from Costa Rican director Neto Villalobos," says the plot synopsis on TIFF's official website.
Villalobos was a sociology major at the University of Costa Rica and studied cinema at the Centre d'Estudis Cinematografics de Catalunya in Barcelona. He made a number of short films including "100 al Este (2010)," "El Papá de Ernesto (2010)" and "Jason (2011);" "Jason" screened at the Cannes International Film Festival.
The film was partially funded on IndieGogo with a campaign that ran from Sept. 10, 2012 through Oct. 1, 2012. The filmmakers asked for $14,000 from fans and other collaborators but wound up getting $16,522.
