A popular "Grey's Anatomy" couple will be leaving Grey Sloan Memorial this upcoming season. Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) will be taking a leave of absence to take care of their new baby, Bailey, and their other young child, Zola.
"They're struggling a bit because they want to get back in the ER," Patrick Dempsey told TVGuide. "They're just losing their minds and they want to have something else to do. They get stuck just doing dishes and diapers."
The fact that Meredith is a new mom leads Callie (Sara Ramirez) to have an interesting bond with Meredith, as well as Cristina (Sandra Oh). Ramirez told TVGuide that the newfound commonality leads to a kinship between the characters. However, the relationship will eventually get complicated.
"They have more things in common than they used to, specifically Meredith and Callie, now they're both mothers, so on that level, Meredith feels for Callie and what she's going through," Ramirez said. "There is a moment where Callie confides in Meredith early on. Cristina and Meredith are two people that Callie is close to during this and interestingly enough, feels betrayed by one of them at one point."
Before getting back to their regular lives, the characters will have to deal with the calamitous storm that is slamming Seattle. According to TVLine, the premiere will show the storm affecting all of the characters in some way, with one character even meeting their demise. The promo features Owen (Kevin McKidd) saying these words: "Time of death, 15:56."
Season 10 will also feature more Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April (Sarah Drew) drama. Last season, April made a heartfelt confession to Jackson, but Jackson was not receptive to her declaration of love.
Showrunner Shonda Rhimes told TVLine that Jackson is still hurt over April leaving him. "He's [Jackson] been very patient, and she's the one who sort of walked away from him. And when the finale happened, he was feeling kind of 'done,' so her declaration is definitely going to have interesting repercussions," Rhimes said.
"She's engaged to somebody else, and he's with somebody else, and it's not as if either of them is behaving, I would say, in the most mature manner. They've definitely got challenging times ahead," Rhimes continued.
One pair that will definitely be romantically involved is Alex (Justin Chambers) and Jo (Camilla Luddington). Meanwhile, Owen will struggle with his complicated love life.
Sandra Oh, who plays Dr. Cristina Yang, will make her exit this season after being on the show from the beginning. Yang has had a complicated relationship with her former husband. Now that Oh's character will be making a permanent exit, fans are hoping for Hunt to finally have a successful relationship.
Rhimes commented on Yang and Owen to Entertainment Weekly. "I would love for Owen to be happy," Rhimes said. "I think Owen has been in love with a very complicated woman. And that's what happens. Sometimes women are in love with complicated men and they get thrown around, but in this situation, Owen is in love with a complicated woman who prefers her genius to almost anything else and that is complex."
"Grey's Anatomy" premieres on Sept. 26 on ABC.
