In Georgia, a woman named Tsiuri Kavaratskhelia has kept the mummified corpse of her son Joni Bakardze in her house for 18 years, after he died from an overdose when he was 22.
According to TVNotas, Bakardze's death left a great emotional toll on Kavaratskhelia, who made the decision to mummify her son's body to give him better care than he would have received at a cemetery.
The young man's mother told local media that she had a dream in which she was told how to conserve her son's body with vodka.
"I had a dream where someone told me to start taking using vodka to take care of my son's body. I've been using alcohol for years," the mother said while showing the room where Bakardze's body lay. She also opened his coffin and showed the state of her son's body in her house in Zugdidi.
In the video, which was shared on YouTube, viewers can see that the camera filmed the Bakardze's body, which is fully dressed with white gloves and a white hood covering his face. When showing her son's body, Kavaratskhelia said that he "was a good son and a good husband, but look at how he ended up."
According to the mother, clothing was kept on the body to not leave it bare and to give her a "heartwarming memory of the young man."
TVNotas also reported some cases similar to Bakardze's, such as the case of Christopher Blackburn's family in Penwortham, England, who kept their father's body in their house for 5 months, with the purpose of collecting close to 2,000 pounds in benefits.
The body of Clarence Bright was also kept in the home of his son Vincent Bright inside a freezer after being exhumed, forcing Vincent to pay a bail of $75,000 dollars. In both cases, the families held on to the bodies with a false hope of them coming back to life, TVNotas surmised.
