Óscar De La Hoya is back in rehabilitation treatment, which will prevent him from attending Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez's fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., the most anticipated sporting event of the year, organized by his company Golden Boy Promotions.
In a press release published on Univisión, de la Hoya expresses his regrets and sends his encouragement to the Mexican boxer Alvarez.
"Canelo Alvarez and I have big fights coming up this weekend," he said. "His is the ring and mine in treatment. I will not be at the fight to cheer Canelo to victory since I have voluntarily admitted myself into a treatment facility." The former boxer continued, "I explained this to Canelo, and he understood that my health and long-term recovery from my disease must come first."
"Thank you for your understanding. I ask for your support and privacy during this difficult time for me and my family," De La Hoya concluded.
According to ESPN, the "Golden Boy's" problems with narcotics were made public when leaked photos showed him wearing women's clothes.
As a consequence of the difficulties derived from his addiction, De La Hoya checked himself voluntarily in May 2011 in a rehab clinic to find a way out from his addictions, and declared he was "tired of lying." However, a year later, he was sued by a former Playboy model, who accused him of sexual abuse, according to People en Español.
Since then, De La Hoya had been in a constant recovery process, after publicly acknowledging his drug problem. Recently, people close to him noted signed of a relapse, rumors which were ratified in the next few days, reported ESPN.
According to CNN México, the bout that will be fought September 14 at the MGM Grand Arena has already beaten a profits record for tickets sold, with a figure higher than $20 million, with online ticket prices going for up to $42,000. Likewise, it's expected that pay-per-view profits will also beat records.
