At least 12 children were hurt after a mechanical attraction ran out of power in the Norwalk Oyster Festival, in Connecticut, which caused the game to suddenly stop, hurting its passengers.
Local police reported that an adult was also among the 13 people transported to nearby hospitals after the accident. Police added that another five people rejected treatment on location, according to The Huffington Post.
The "Zumur" mechanical attraction, which swung the children, suffered from a mechanical failure, which caused it to suddenly stop and make people crash against each other.
In an intervie with FOX News, police Lieutenant Paul Resnick said that an 8-year-old child was hospitalized with injuries that don't put his life at risk, while the rest of the passengers were treated and discharged.
Initial investigations reported that passengers had fallen to the ground, however, later investigations indicated that no children or adults were ejected from the game or fell from it, Fox News reported.
The Norwalk Seaport Association non-profit organization said that the games were closed until inspections were done. Afterwards, the other attractions were reopened and the rest of the fair was kept open in its third and last day.
The operator of the game, Stewart Amusement, which at first avoided making any commentaries on what had happened, emitted a press release on its website stating that its attractions are inspected by its personnel every day, by state and local inspectors weekly and by engineers and insurance inspectors every year.
"Your safety is of the utmost importance to us," the company's statement said. "Not only do we have the obligation of providing our clients with the safest equipment and environment possible, but our final success also depends on it."
Local authorities stated that they will continue investigating the causes of the accident.
