The Rio de Janiero Film Festival has announced the official selection of films that will compete at this year's event.

Eleven films will compete in the Premiere Brazil fiction competition including Lina Chamie's "Os Amigos," Caru Alves de Souza's "De Menor" and Hilton Lacerda's "Tatuagem." Other films include "Minutos Atras" by Caio Soh and "Estrada 47" by Vicente Ferraz.

In the Premiere Brazil documentaries competition, eight films will compete for the top prize. Some of those movies include "A Gente" by Aly Muritiba, "Fla x Flu" by Renato Terra and "A Farra Do Circo" by Roberto Berliner and Pedro Bronz.

The New Trends Brazil section will include "Tao Longe e Aqui" by Eliz Capai, "O Uivo da Gaita" by Bruno Safadi and "Mar Negro" by Ricardo Argao.

The festival also announced that American scriptwriter/director Paul Schrader will be honored with a special retrospective of his work. Schrader's new film "The Canyons" starring Lindsay Lohan and James Deen will also have its Latin American premiere at the festival.

Other sections that were announced included the Panorama -- Great Documentary Filmmakers sidebar. Films that will be part of the section include Frederick Wiseman's "At Berkeley," Nicolas Philibert's "La Maison de la Radio," Errol Morris' "The Unknown Known," Rithy Panh's "The Missing Picture" and Claude Lanzmann's "Le Dernier des Injustes." Werner Herzog's "On Death Row" and Ken Loach's "The Spirit of 45" will also take part in the section.

In the German contemporary cinema, Focus Germany section, Thomas Arslan's "Gold," which premiered in competition at the Berlin Film Festival, and Caroline Link's "Morroco" will be centerpieces.

The festival is known for attempting to bring the best in Brazilian cinema to the international market. The premiere Brazil sections are also an attempt to raise awareness for Brazilian culture. The program also travels and is usually developed with a number of instituions.

The Rio de Janiero Film Festival will run from September 26 to October 10.
