At least 6 alleged accomplices of narco guerilla commander "Megateo" were arrested and will be extradited to Miami, where they will face a trial against them, Colombian authorities announced.
According to El Nuevo Herald, the decision to extradite the alleged accomplices was revealed on September 4 by Frank Tamen, the prosecutor who told the news to Donald Graham, Federal Judge in charge of the case.
During an press conference in downtown Miami, Tamen said that those arrested numbered "between 5 and 6," the newspaper reported.
For the moment, it is unknown if Víctor Ramón Navarro Serrano "Megateo" is among those detained to be extradited to Miami. However, specialists and lawyers familiar with the case say that the main suspect is still at large somewhere in the mountainous regions north of Colombia, close to the border with Venezuela, El Nuevo Herald noted.
According to ABC, "Megateo" is the biggest drug trafficker in Catatumbo, in northeastern Colombia, and is one of the commanders of the EPL (Ejército Popular de Liberación) guerrilla. He is one of the most wanted criminals in Colombia, whose government is offering a reward of 2,000 million pesos for information leading to his capture, while the United States government is offering a $5 million reward for him.
Adding to the hard-to-access zone in which he's presumed to be hiding, "Megateo" is regarded by the President of the Colombian SenateJuan Fernando Cristo as a "new" Pablo Escobar. "Just like Pablo Escobar was protected by the Medellín communes, 'Megateo' is protected in the Catatumbo mountains by the local population," reported El Espectador.
Serrano has won the respect of the poorest of the population by handing out school supplies, walking old ladies to the markets, giving away Christmas presents and throwing big parties, which is why they consider him to be a kind of new Robin Hood, reported Semana in the first interview "Megateo" has given to the media in 10 years.
In a previous case of the detention of 24 alleged accomplices of the drug trafficker, the extradition of most of them has been confirmed, revealed El Nuevo Herald.
