Alberto Carrillo Fuentes, the leader of the New Juárez Cartel, was detained during an operation carried out in Nayarit, Mexico on August 31. Fuentes, who is also known as "Betty la Fea," is the brother of the deceased founder of the cartel, Amado Carrillo Fuentes.
According to Mexican newspaper Excélsior, the brother of the so-called "Lord of the Skies," was put at the disposal of the Deputy Attorney Specialized in Organized Crime Investigation (SEIDO) of the Attorney General of the Mexican Republic, on Sunday morning, where his legal situation will be defined.
The alleged cartel leader will face charges for crimes against health and organized crime in at least four investigations against him. It is expected that official PGR sources detail his capture in the next hours.
According to Vanguardia, 47-year-old Sinaloa native Carrillo was detained in an exclusive area of Bucerías, Nayarit. The detention didn't provoke any kind of violent action, in part because the alleged drug trafficker had no bodyguards with him.
In 1997, after the death of Amado Carrilo Fuentes, his brother, Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, "El Viceroy," assumed control of the Juárez Cartel. Due to disputes with other organized crime groups and health issues, he was forced to abandon leadership, leading his younger brother to found the New Juárez Cartel.
Currently called the "Carrillo clan," it is comprised of the sons of the "Lord of the Skies," Julio César and Juan Carrillo Leyva, who could assume leadership after the capture of their uncle.
Carrillo is accused of being one of the main leaders of drug trafficking in Mexico, as well as allegedly maintaining an alliance with Los Zetas and the Beltrán Leyva Cartel to regain control of Chihuahua, a state in northern Mexico.
