Apple has made another acquisition of a start-up software company but this time from Sweden.
According to Rapidus, Apple purchased AlgoTrim, which is a software developing firm specializing in compressing algorithms for mobile devices.

AlgoTrim helps "develop advanced solutions for mobile devices within the fields of data compression, mobile imaging and video, and computer graphics."
The Swedish company has experience with Google's Android mobile platform, and it has helped detect and report bugs found in the operating system.
"We also improve and optimize the Framework Layer in the Android OS Stack to unlock the tremendous speed of our imaging codecs," noted AlgoTrim. "Android smartphone device manufacturers benefits from our improved viewing speed in the Gallery photo album app, for example."
AlgoTrim, based in Malmö, Sweden, reported a revenue of 3.0 million SEK, or approximately $456,000 when converted to the U.S. dollar.
"Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans," said Apple spokeswoman Kirstin Huguet, in regards to the Cupertino-based company's purchase of AlgoTrim.
Huguet's statement, however, is the same issued when Latinos Post reported on Apple's acquisition of HopStop, Locationary, and Embark Inc. this summer. The purchases of the three aforementioned companies were likely to improve Apple's maps app.
As Latinos Post has been monitoring, Apple Maps launched last September with iOS 6. The maps app was created to replace Apple reliance on Google Maps. However, Apple Maps was immediately criticized, from the app's incorrect labeling to its outright bizarre depictions of roads and landmarks. The Apple Maps criticism was so vocal that Apple CEO Tim Cook issued a rare apology late last year.
