Usain Bolt, the fastest man in the world, has revealed who he thinks is the favorite to win in the upcoming World Cup 2014.
The avid soccer fan stated that he had an affinity for the home squad in the upcoming competition.
"I've been watching a few matches this year and I'm impressed by Brazil," Bolt said, according to NDTV Sports. "They have a young team and can win it at home."
The runner attended the FIFA headquarters on Wednesday and got an opportunity to see the World Cup trophy first hand.
"For me, it's an honor to be here. I follow football and I saw the World Cup Trophy for the first time," he enthused.
Bolt's choice isn't exactly a bold prediction. Brazil is coming off a Confederations Cup championship, its third straight. In the final, Brazil destroyed defending World Champion Spain 3-0 before an ecstatic Maracana crowd. Interestingly, Brazil has never won the World Cup after winning a Confederations Cup title. The team lost the tournament in 2001, but won the World Cup in 2002.
However, the five-time champions have a major advantage over any European contender. When the tournament has been hosted in South America, only South American teams have reigned victorious. Spain was the first team to accomplish the feat in 2010 when it won the tournament in South Africa. However, the likelihood of the accomplishment taking place in two straight tournaments is minimal, especially in soccer-crazed Brazil.
The World Cup takes place from June 12 to July 13.
