Mexico Train Derailment Update: Bodies of Migrants Will be Returned Home

The bodies of six Honduran migrants will be transported to their home countries by Mexican authorities. According to Milenio, they traveled clandestinely on the train known as "The Beast" in the state of Tabasco in southeast Mexico when it derailed.

The National Institute of Migration (INM) said that two Honduran nationals are still hospitalized and said that the bodies being returned to Honduras belonged to people between the ages of 19 and 58.

The manager of Velasco Mortuary told the media, "We will take the bodies to the airport of Villahermosa city where, we were told, they would be place in a special plane that would travel to Honduras." The newspaper explained that it is expected that a group comprised by representatives of the Secretariat of Foreign Relations, Federal Police and the National Institute of Migration will travel on board the plane.

Milenio also reported that the families of the victims will be in charge of retrieving the bodies, providing documentation and the data necessary for the process. Meanwhile, work continues on removing the ruins of "The Beast" by Tabasco's Civil Protection.

The same authorities explained that they have not dismissed the possibility of finding more bodies during the investigation process, which had not yet finished by August 27. Tabasco's Civil Protection stated that they have only raised seven of the eight cars that derailed, which transported close to 100 tons of scrap, steel and iron each.

According to Milenio, the Secretariat of Communications and Transports pointed out that the speed of the train was just 10 kilometers per hour, which was adequate for the load it carried, but authorities from the state of Tabasco said that the cause of the accident was the excess of speed and that the rain provoked its derailing.

Milenio reports that close to 140 thousand foreigners illegally enter Mexico with their final destination being the United States, searching for a better life. They expose themselves to great peril along the way, including kidnappings by armed groups and robberies on board "The Beast."
