'One Direction: This is Us" Review Roundup: Boy Band Documentary Called 'Propaganda,' Receives Mixed Reaction

This weekend "One Direction: This is Us" will be released nationwide.

The movie tells the story of Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry and Louis' meteoric rise to fame, from their humble hometown beginnings and competing on "The X-Factor," to conquering the world and performing at London's famed O2 Arena.

The movie marks the first big screen appearance for the boy band, which has dominated the top spots on the pop charts. The film recently premiered to mixed reviews. Justin Lowe of the Hollywood Reporter gave the film a positive review stating, "Adding another must-see item to their portfolio will surely only increase One Direction's popularity."

Anna Smith of Empire Magazine gave the film three stars out of five and wrote, "1D in 3D: the closest thing to a 'Shine A Light' for Directioners."

Variety's Andrew Barker was mixed about the film and stated, "The film's central fivesome prove charming pallbearers throughout the film, which alternates between inspired and insipid as it hits its hagiographic marks."

Simon Reyonds of the Digital Spy offered a far more blunt critique: "This is not a film. It's propaganda."

Robbie Collin of Daily Telegraph gave the movie two stars out of five and wrote, "They rattle through all the hits, like 'Kiss You,' 'Rock Me' and 'I Would': songs that leave you pining for the harmonic complexity and lyrical daring of Justin Bieber."

The new film is directed by Morgan Spurlock who is best known for his work "Super Size Me," "Mansome" and "Comic-Con IV: A Fan's Hope." Tristar will release the film in 2,500 theaters. "One Direction: This is Us" is rated PG for mild language.
