The MTV Video Music Awards were held on Aug. 25 in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center.
The show opened with Lady Gaga performing "Applause." The singer changed into three different costumes before concluding the performance in a shell bikini and a blonde wig.
One of the highlights of the night was when Jimmy Fallon presented the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award to Justin Timberlake. The singer performed "Take Back the Night" as well as a number of his biggest hits. Timberlake not only danced, but also played the piano and by the end of the performance reunited with his old boy band 'N Sync. Timberlake also won the biggest award of the night for Best Music Video of the Year for his song "Mirrors." He also won two more awards for his music videos "Mirrors" and "Suit and Tie."
Another highlight included a performance by Miley Cyrus of her hit single "We can't Stop." Cyrus stripped down to a bikini and danced to Robin Thicke as he performed. Kanye West also performed in a silhouette and never revealed his face. Drake also performed a few of his hit songs.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis performed their song "Same Love" and also won two awards including Best Social Message Video and Best Hip Hop Video. The award for Best Song of the Summer went to One Direction for the song "Best Song Ever."
Taylor Swift won the award for Best Female Music Video while Selena Gomez won for Best Pop Video. The winner for Artist to Watch went to Austin Mahone. The award was voted by the public during the show.
The Best Male Video award went to Bruno Mars, who also won a technical award for his music video, and later performed his new single "Gorilla."
Other winners included Capital City, Janelle Monae, Pink, Nate Ruess and Thirty Seconds to Mars.
Celebrities present at the awards ceremony included Kevin Hart, Ed Sheeran, Daft Punck, Jared Leto, Lil Kim, One Direction and Iggie. Rhihanna,Vampire Weekend, Jason Collins, Emily Sande, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Adam Lambert also attended the awards ceremony.
The show concluded with a performance of Katy Perry's new hit "Roar."
