For years, Iker Casillas has been the one steady anchor in Real Madrid's ever revolving door of superstars. However, the Madrid captain looks to be on his way out after getting benched in Madrid's opening match last weekend.
Numerous reports indicated that the Spanish captain would regain his starting position from Diego Lopez after losing it a year ago under Jose Mourinho. However, new coach Carlo Ancelotti opted for the latter in his La Liga opener and has drawn tons of speculation about Casillas' future.
Arsenal and Barcelona have been rumored as top contenders for Casillas' services. While many might see Barcelona as the wrong choice given the two teams' rivalry, former goalkeeper Santiago Canizares believes that a move to Barcelona is not necessarily a bad thing.
"I don't see any problems if he were to leave Madrid for Barcelona," he said, according to Give Me Sport. "At Barcelona - and anywhere else in the world - he would get the recognition he deserves ... What matters most is your job and if you can't do it at your current club, you will have to look elsewhere. If I were Casillas, I would start thinking about leaving Madrid. This situation is not normal."
"The current situation at Madrid is very uncomfortable for both goalkeepers. I have never thought that having two great shot-stoppers at one team was a good idea. Casillas is always the center of attention at the moment," he added.
Arsenal is also rumored to have interest in the superstar goalie.
