Roger Federer has been seeded seventh in the 2013 US Open, the first time he was seeded lower than No.3 in a major tournament in more than a decade.
Federer moved two place down to seventh in the latest world rankings following his recent poor performances. The Swiss tennis ace suffered a second-round exit in his first appearance at Gstaad since 2004, which was followed by a quarterfinal exit in the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Cincinnati.
The 32-year-old Federer, who pulled out of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Montreal due to a back injury, hadn't been seeded fourth or lower at the US Open since the 2002 edition, wherein he was the 13th seed.
The last time he was out of the top three in a major tournament was at the Wimbledon in 2003, where he was seeded fourth, but he went on to win the crown, his first Grand Slam title. Federer, the top seed in last year's tournament, won five of his 17 Grand Slam titles at Flushing Meadows.
Meanwhile, as expected, current world No.1 Novak Djokovic was named as the top seed, followed by Rafael Nadal and defending US Open champion Andy Murray. The seeding of the tournament followed the latest world rankings.
Djokovic is expected to go all out in this year's tournament to avenge his finals defeat to Murray last year. The 26-year-old Serb ruled the 2011 US Open and has reached the semifinals of the tournament in the last six years.
Nadal recently dislodged Murray at the second spot in the world rankings after ruling the Montreal Masters and bagging his first Cincinnati title. After being slowed down by knee injuries late last year and earlier this year, Nadal is back in tip-top shape as he remains undefeated in 15 hard-court matches for 2013.
