The hit show about the topsy-turvey lives of four complicated twenty-something girls will return to HBO in 2014. According to the National Post, a teaser trailer was released this week that allows fans to get a glimpse of what the third season will have in store.
The fast-paced teaser is a 31-second long amalgam of production stills from the set, accompanied by the song "Break Out The Boom Boom" by Robert Totera. The trailer reveals nothing about upcoming storylines, but it does offer hints of what we can expect in upcoming episodes.
Season two ended rather depressingly. Ray (Alex Karpovsky) and Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) broke up and Hannah is mired in a hypochondriacal depression while trying to write her book. The only person who gets what she wants is Marnie (Allison Williams), who gets back together with her now successful ex, Charlie (Christopher Abbot).
The teaser for season three appears to be a lot happier than the previous season, evidenced by a lot of stills of the girls smiling on the beach.
Some facts we can glean from the teaser is that Hannah and her on-again off-again boyfriend Adam (Adam Driver) are once again on good terms, meaning they are probably back together. Marnie also seems to be happy despite losing her job last season. Jessa (Jemima Kirke), who disappeared last season, is back on the show in one of her signature long, flowing dresses. Shoshanna is seen donning a crazy hairstyle, but aside from that, there are no signs as to what Shoshanna will be up to. Shoshanna's former boyfriend, Ray, is also returning, along with Hannah's ex-boyfriend and former roommate, Elijah (Andrew Rannells).
The person who is absent from the trailer is Christopher Abbot, who played Charlie, Marnie's boyfriend. Abbot exited this past spring after reports of his inability to see eye to eye with Dunham.
Despite the absence of Charlie, which means Marnie will once again be single, Producer Jenni Konner said that the third season will be more upbeat due the girls experiencing "financial stability." Financial stability can be hard to come by for twentysomething girls, so the smiles and hugs throughout the teaser are warranted.
The series won two Golden Globe Awards in 2013: Dunham won for best actress, and the show won for best comedy or musical series.
Dunham tweeted the trailer, along with the message, "Third time's a charm..."
"Girls" season three airs on HBO in 2014.
