The New York Film Festival has announced 51 films for its official slate.
The festival will open with the Paul Greengrasses thriller "Captain Phillips," which stars Tom Hanks, and will close with Spike Jonze's latest film "Her" starring Joaquin Phoenix. The centerpiece film will be "The Secret of Walter Mitty" directed by Ben Stiller.
Several Cannes films will arrive at the festival including the Palm d'Or winner "Blue is the Warmest Color" and the Coen brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis." James Gray's "The Immigrant," starring Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner, and Alexander Payne's "Nebraska" will also premiere. J.C. Chandor's "All is Lost" and Jim Jarmusch's "Only Lovers Left Alive" will also be screened.
A few films from the Toronto Film festival will also receive New York premieres, including James Franco's "Child of God," Ralph Fiennes' "The Invisible Woman" and Roger Michell's "La Weekend."
One of the most notable films making its world premiere is Richard Curtis' "About Time" starring Rachel McAdams, Domhall Gleeson, Lindsay Duncan and Bill Nighy.
The festival has yet to announce its secret in-progress film, but most pundits speculate the film will be Martin Scorsese's "Wolf of Wall Street." The mystery project series began two years ago when Scorsese held a secret screening for "Hugo" and last year Steven Spielberg showed "Lincoln."
The festival is known as one of the most important film expos in the world. Many of the opening and closing films garner Oscar nominations. Last year "Life of Pi" opened the festival and ended up winning four Academy Awards, while "Flight," which closed the festival, garnered two nominations. Other films to premiere at the festival and garner Oscar success include "My Week with Marilyn," "The Descendants," "The Artist," "The Social Network" and "The Queen."
The New York Film Festival will run from Sept. 27 to Oct. 13.
