The MTV Video Music Awards are right around the corner. While the ceremony format is reminiscent of the Oscars and Grammys, it's unique. It's the only ceremony that celebrates and glorifies the music video, a flourishing art form that inspires awe and procrastination. When perfected, a music video can embody the artist's persona. It can define them. It can make or break them. Sometimes a video becomes more popular than the song, giving it that extra boost to catapult it to the top of the charts.

As August 25 approaches, enthusiasts look forward and speculate on the coveted awards. One category in particular, "Best Song of the Summer," getting plenty of attention. To make things sweeter, fans can interactively gage how well their favorites artists are prevailing, as MTV provides a live update of the polls. Although one artist currently dominates the pack, here's a list of the nominations along with our predictions.

One Direction - "Best Song Ever"

Miley Cyrus - "We Can't Stop"

Selena Gomez - "Come and Get It"

Robin Thicke - "Blurred Lines"

Daft Punk - "Get Lucky"

Calvin Harris - "I Need Your Love"

Although there are still two weeks remaining until the 2013 VMA's, One Direction currently leads the polls with well over 5 million votes. The runner-up, Miley Cyrus, has a long road ahead if she plans to catch the leader, as she currently sits with less than 3 million votes.

Unfortunately, it appears as though the category has become more of a popularity contest. While songs like "Blurred Lines" and "Get Lucky" may have more musical integrity in terms of originality and production, artists with a larger fan base, like One Direction's army of Directioners, are bound to win. The contest is skewed. That being said, it is representative of where the ears of our generation tend to drift, especially those of the youth, as they're much more likely to vote than other demographics.

It's still anyone's game, but while the result may be contested and misrepresented, the numbers don't lie. Unless a tremendous comeback is in the cards, the winner of the "Best Song of the Summer" will be One Direction for their track "Best Song Ever." After all, it's already in the name.
