The MTV Video Music Awards are just a week away. The awards show, which promises to bring exciting live performances by the year’s hottest acts, will be held in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center for the first time ever. Details about this year’s MTV VMAs are slowly making their way to fans, with several acts already announced.
Latinos Post breaks down the confirmed acts, which include the smooth vocals of Justin Timberlake as well as the danceable songs of Miley Cyrus.
Justin Timberlake: Timberlake was among the first artists confirmed for the upcoming VMAs. The singer, which will be performing songs from his newest album The 20/20 Experience. Timberlake, who leads with six VMA nominations this year, will also be receiving the “Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award,” MTV announced.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis: The rapping duo will also hit the stage at this year’s VMAs. The “Thrift Shop” duo, who tie with Justin Timberlake in award nominations, will be performing their hit gay rights anthem “Same Love,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. THR also reported that two will also make history for being the first artist to perform at all three of MTV’s televised events (mtvU Woodies, MTV Movie Awards and MTV VMAs) in a calendar year.
Lady Gaga: Mother Monster will also be on the stage this year as she debuts her first single off of her fourth album ARTPOP. According to MTV, in celebration of the upcoming Gaga performance, MTV Hits, the network’s 24-hour music channel, played an hour of Lady Gaga videos and performances.
Kanye West: Lest he be interrupted on stage, Kanye West will mark his return to the VMA stage with his seventh VMA performance. MTV announced that the rapper will be performing his latest single, “BLKKK SKKKN HEAD.” The performance will tie West with pop icon Madonna in the number of VMA performances. Like Lady Gaga, West's performance was celebrated with an hour-block of videos and performances on MTV Hits on August 6.
Katy Perry: The bubbly pop star will perform her breakout hit “Roar” off of her upcoming third album Prism at this year’s award ceremony. According to THR, the pop princess also enjoyed an hour-block of her videos and performances on MTV Hits on August 13. Perry’s Prism is scheduled for release on October 22.
Miley Cyrus: The former Disney darling will be performing her hit summer single "We Can't Stop." Cyrus, who is up for four Moonmen this year, will release her upcoming album Bangerz on October 8.
Robin Thicke: Thicke will join Cyrus in performing his own hit summer single “Blurred Lines,” which is nominated for four Moonmen. The singer, who collaborated with Pharrell and T.I. for his summer hit, said, “I am excited to be an inaugural nominee in the ‘Song of the Summer category and to be performing on the VMAs. We have some big surprises planned and I hope everyone will tune in to see it.”
Surprise Guest: Daft Punk. The French duo has not confirmed their appearance at this year’s VMA but cancelled on “The Colbert Report” earlier this month due to a contractual agreement with MTV, THR reported.
The MTV Video Music Awards will air on Sunday, August 25 from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
