New television shows come and go. Some catch flame after the first season while others quickly burn out and fade. Netflix, however, has changed the game. In a the past, a series would gain popularity during its first season, but then plateau. Once the season is over, new and potential fans have to wait until the second season to really engage with the show. There's a period of downtime where its popularity culminates by word of mouth. But with Netflix's Watch Instantly model, potential fans can log on and watch the show for themselves whenever they please. There's no waiting for the show's return or the season 1 DVD release. It's there, ready for consumption. It's what allows new series like "Orange Is the New Black" to experience the rapid and booming success that it did. It's not only reshaping the way we watch television, but also the recipe for success.
The network's newest original series, "Orange Is the New Black," skyrocketed to Netflix's top spot, overtaking both "House of Cards" and the fourth season of "Arrested Development" in popularity. Its fan base continues to grow, as does the demand for a second season. Luckily, a follow up has already been confirmed, however, slight adjustments could change the course of subsequent seasons.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, leading lady Laura Prepon will not return as a series regular for season 2. Prepon will return to "Orange Is the New Black" to wrap up her storyline, however, the details remain unclear.
"Our season is still developing and nothing is confirmed," a Netflix representative said in a statement. It's also unclear whether Prepon left on her own accord or if executive producer Jenji Kohan had a hand in her departure. Regardless, fans are now eager to see how Prepon's farewell will rock the prison.
In season 1, Prepon plays Alex, who shared an intricate on-again, off-again relationship with Piper, played by Taylor Schilling. The relationship is full of lies, deceit and prison sex. Fans will be sad to see her go, but perhaps it's for the best.
"Orange Is the New Black" will return to Netflix in 2014, although an official premiere date has yet to be confirmed.
