Eva Longoria's series "Devious Maids" has been renewed for a second season by Lifetime network. The show, which was created for ABC by Marc Cherry, will be back in 2014 with 13 new episodes.
The series premiered on June 23 and has become the fastest growing drama in Lifetime's history, becoming the number one choice of female cable viewers on Sundays at 10 p.m. The show has an 18 percent Hispanic audience, which almost doubles the prime time numbers on that same channel.
"Devious Maids" debuted with a modest two million viewers, of which 826,000 were in the 18-49 age group, but has proven to be one of the most solid new summer shows. Two weeks ago, the program had its strongest showing with 2.9 million viewers, a 45 percent increase since it debuted, rivaling the "Real Housewives" on Bravo, which has 1.4 million viewers in the key demographic. "Devious Maids" has grown steadily popular among women, with an increase of 74 percent since it first debuted.
The first episode introduced viewers to Marisol Duarte, a woman who takes a job as a maid and is determined to uncover the truth behind the murder of one of the previous maids. Not only does she infiltrate the household, but she also sets out to befriend some of the other maids in the neighborhood in hopes of getting information to clear her son's name of the murder.
"This is one of the most daring series of television, 'Devious Maids' has quickly become a success," Lifetime's Executive Vice President Rob Sharenow said in a statement while announcing the show's renewal. The drama revolves around a group of maids who are played by Ana Ortiz, Dania Ramirez, Roselyn Sanchez, Edy Ganem and Judy Reyes, who work together and share their struggles.
Susan Lucci, Rebecca Wisocky, Tom Irwin, Mariana Klaveno, Grant Show, Matt Cedeno, Melinda Page Hamilton, Drew Van Acker, Brianna Brown and Brett Cullen also co-star in the program. Mexican actor Jaime Camil also had a brief role on the program as an abusive husband.
The series is inspired by the hit telenovela "Ellas Son La Alegria Del Hogar" and was commisioned by Lifetime after it was developed as an ABC pilot but was rejected by the network. Eva Longoria is the executive producer of the show.
Longoria was seen this week out on the campaign trail supporting democratic candidate Cory Brooker in his run for the U.S. Senate. The star accompanied the politician in a campaign stop in Newark, New Jersey.
