Michael Phelps was all simles after winning the 200-meter Individual Medley final in London on Thursday evening. The win makes him the first male Olympian ever to win the same event in three consecutive Olympics.
Phelps ended the race with 1:54.27 and was followed by Ryan Lochte who clocked 1:54.90. Third place went to Laszlo Cseh from Hungary who finished with 1:56.22.
With the win, Phelps not only earned his 16th career Olympic gold medal but he also further increased the difference of most Olympic medals over career between himself and Larisa Latynina. Phelps now sets the bar higher with 20 Olympic medals in his career, Latynina remains with 18 medals.
After winning the race, Phelps responded with modesty but a hard-to-ignore smile was drawn on his face as spectators energetically cheered him as he got out of the water. British comentators described his smile as "enchanting" and the performance as "utterly brilliant".
