Notorious gangster James "Whitey" Bulger was convicted on 31 of 32 counts including racketeering and conspiracy by a Boston jury on Monday. He was also found guilty of being involved in 11 murders during his long reign as a blood thirsty mob boss of Boston.
The 83-year-old Winter Hill Gang leader, who has long denied he was an informant, will likely live out the rest of his days in prison. He spent 16 years on the lam and was one of the FBI's 10 most wanted before being captured in California in 2011.
His sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 13.
Patricia Donahue, whose husband Michael Donahue was an innocent bystander when he and a target of Bulger's were gunned down, says she "became very emotional," after Bulger's guilty verdict was announced, reports NBC News.
"So many peoples' lives were so terribly harmed by the criminal actions of Bulger and his crew. And today's conviction does not alter that harm, and it doesn't lessen it," said U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz, speaking about the victims and their families, reports CNN.
"However, we hope that they find some degree of comfort in the fact that today has come, and Bulger is being held accountable for his horrific crimes," she said.
Bulger was accused of being involved in 19 murders that took place between 1973 and 1985. However, the jury found that prosecutors failed to prove Bulger was involved in seven of the murders, and jurors had "no finding" in one murder.
