Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas will not play for Spain in the nation's upcoming friendly match against Ecuador.

The midfielder was injured during a 3-1 victory against the Malaysia All Stars in which he scored a goal.

According to Barcelona's website: "Cesc Fabregas had a number of tests this morning after arriving back from Malaysia to measure the extent of the ankle injury he picked up in Saturday's match...It has subsequently been confirmed that the player has sprained a ligament in his right ankle.

"Club doctors have contacted the Spanish FA to recommend that the player should not join the national squad for the friendly against Ecuador so that he can undergo treatment in Barcelona.''

Fabregas' injury is the second major one incurred by the club this preseason. Earlier this week superstar Lionel Messi was also injured and was left off the squad on Saturday.

Fabregas had been playing well throughout the preseason and looked ready to command a starting role in the team's midfield, but the injury could set him back and put his position as a starter in peril.

Fabregas recently pledged his allegiance to Barcelona amidst a plethora of transfer rumors that had him moving to Manchester United.

"My dream is to play here, I have never considered leaving," he said, according to Mundo Deportivo. "I am at the best club."

"Things were invented," he said about the transfer rumors. "I do not understand how after Tito, Zubi, Tata and Bartomeu all said they counted on me. I have not spoken with any other club for two summers now."
