As Shonda Rhime’s legions of Gladiators prepare for the upcoming season of her hit political drama on ABC “Scandal,” details are slowly emerging about what’s to come this fall. When fans left D.C. last spring, Olivia (Kerry Washington) was left in the midst of a huge political scandal involving her affair with the president and the reemergence of her father Rowan (Joe Morton).
Actor Jeff Perry, who plays Cyrus Beane, told TVLine, “We thought we were fine, that we had somehow escaped the guillotine of the election-rigging, Cytron and all that. But now someone, somewhere has leaked the ridiculous rumor that Olivia and the president were having an affair!”
“If my boss had to ‘fess up to that...If Olivia Pope had to ‘fess up to that...If they deny it, if one denies it and the other ‘fesses up...It’s a whole multiplication table of a mess for Cyrus,” the actor added. “Just a giant mess.”
But if there’s anyone who knows how to clean up political messes, is Cyrus...and Olivia.
While many assume that Liv’s team of Gladiators will come to their bosses rescue, the cast signaled that it may not be that easy. Actress Katie Lowes (Quinn Perkins) told TVLine, “You know how it is on ‘Scandal’--whatever you think is going to happen is not what happens, because Shonda Rhimes is so smart. So while you would think [Quinn, Harrison et al ride to Liv’s rescue], it’s more complicated than that.”
Darby Stanchfield, who plays Abby Whelan, added, “It is Olivia Pope after all, so there are many, many more layers and many, many more people involved. There may be one or two more bad guys who rear their heads, that may or may not be on the show already. It’s just really complex.”
“Scandal” season 3 premieres on Thursday, October 3 at 10 p.m.
