Bayern Munich starts its Bundesliga title defense on Friday when it takes on Borussia Moenchengladbach on Friday.
The match will feature Pep Guardiola's first major challenge as manager. The Spanish coach spent 60 million euros to improve the squad this summer and will now have to prove that he can do what his predecessor Jupp Heynckes did: win a treble with Munich.
"We want to achieve something that has not been done in Europe before," Bayern sports director Matthias Sammer said on Wednesday. "We want to go after the treble again and on top of that we want the European Super Cup and the club World Cup."
Munich is coming off a season in which it was the best team in the world. The team demolished Barcelona on its way to the Champions league title and managed to defeat rival Borussia Dortmund for the German league title.
"Bayern Munich have an exceptional squad," admitted Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp. "It may be the world's most exceptional squad. We will try to get everything we can out of our season but as it stands now that would mean second place."
"At the very top I see Bayern and Dortmund, almost level," he added. "Bayern have more depth in their squad and can replace three or even four players throughout the entire season. I do not see any other serious contenders with all the respect I have for Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke 04."
Surprisingly, Bayern has only won one game in its last four tries against Moenchengladbach; moreover this team has scored first in the last two games against Munich.
Prediction: The champs start with a terrific 5-1 win.
