'Supernatural' is bringing on another recruit to join the otherworldly cast in season nine.
According to TV Line, sci-fi veteran Tahmoh Penikett is joining the Winchester brothers this upcoming season as Ezekiel. Executive Producer Jeremy Carver describes Ezekiel as "a dignified warrior angel injured in the Fall." The "Fall" refers to the fall of the angels in last May's season finale. The new character will appear in the show's season nine premiere in October, and will stay on for multiple episodes.
Penikett has appeared on "Dollhouse," sci-fi cult classic "Battlestar Galactica" and "Continuum," as well as "Castle" and the CW series "Arrow." Fans will first see Penikett as Ezekiel in the Season 9 premiere.
EP Carver commented about the fallen angels arc at Comic-Con. "A world full of fallen angels is pretty much a free-for-all," Carver said.
"We're going to see it's not one unified body," he added. "We've got lots of angels out there with lots of different agendas. Many are feelings lost and vengeful. A world of fallen angels is a dirty, bloody, scary and, in some ways, a very human world."
This season will also see Castiel (Misha Collins) adapt to life as a mortal after his transformation from angel to human in season eight. Collins joked about the drastic shift that Castiel experiences and pointed out that he can no longer aid the Winchester brothers in the same way. He joked that "now he [Castiel] can pop in and basically fold laundry. There's a shift in the dynamic there in terms of how he can be utilized by the brothers. For Castiel's arc, it's going to be an immensely rich terrain to explore."
Castiel will have to experience a lot of firsts, according to Collins, such as "getting to experience what it's like to actually eat - and then what happens to the food after. You're an adult and you're flushing the toilet for the first time. There's gotta be an epiphany," he joked.
Carver hinted at a very brotherly story arc that fans will see in the upcoming season. The show's two principal characters, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester, are always dealing with their complicated relationship as brothers. This season, the siblings will bond together more than ever due to dire circumstances.
"For the first time in a long time, the brothers chose each other and their love for each other over the season-long quest," Carver shared. "That has left them stronger than ever, but has also created a tremendous amount of fallout."
He added that season nine will see "brothers walking into a world where all the normal constructs of Heaven and Hell aren't there anymore."
Padalecki said that the brothers will fiercely support each other to combat their many obstacles.
"We keep on fighting the fight together," Padalecki said. "In this free-for-all world, where we have the King of Hell living in our dungeon and angels walking all over the place, we're really going to need each other."
The series will return to the CW on its new night, Tuesday, on Oct. 8 at 9 p.m.
