Show creator Shonda Rhimes is known for her outrageous cliffhanger season finales and equally nail-biting season premieres. For the 10th season opener of her popular medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” fans can expect Rhimes to deliver on the drama and the excitement.
Production on the upcoming season of the hit ABC medical drama has already begun, with details of the upcoming season slowly making their way out of the writers' room. TVLine confirmed that the season opener is called “Seal Our Fate” and that it will be “dark.” Fans may remember that season nine ended with a slew of relationships on the line, as well as former Chief Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) fighting for his life.
Actress Sarah Drew, who plays Dr. April Kepner, revealed that “the sad little Chief is still face-down on the [basement] floor” when the show opens up. While Pickens’ character deals with possible death, Drew’s April will have a lot of relationship drama to deal with this fall and she isn’t the only one.
“Jackson (Jesse Williams) proposed to her and she said yes, but then basically said no, and all of the sudden she just accepted a proposal,” Drew told TVLine. “But then Jackson almost dies and she decides now she wants him? Put yourself in his shoes--that’s gotta feel a little crappy!”
While Jackson and April figure out their relationship, two marriages are on the verge of total collapse. Actress Sara Ramirez, who plays Callie, revealed that her character’s relationship with wife Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) is “back to Step 1” after Arizona cheats on her with Dr. Lauren Boswell (guest star Hilarie Burton).
Meanwhile, actor Kevin McKidd (Owen) previewed that he and on-screen ex-wife Sandra Oh (Christina) will likely spend most of season 10 “broken up.” McKidd added, “The problem the have is they really kind of are the loves of each other’s lives, but they have fundamental, opposing, strong beliefs. so is one of them going to back down? I don’t know,” he said.
In other “Grey’s” news, while the medical has been going strong for over nine seasons, there have been rumors that there might be a cast shakeup come next season. Rhimes spoke about the possibility of losing the show’s core cast of Ellen Pompeo, Patrick Dempsey, Sandra Oh, Justin Chambers and Chandra Wilson, saying she feels more prepared about losing them than she has in the past.
“I’ve been through it before and, as with anything, if you had the experience of having done it already you know how to approach it,” Rhimes said. “Whereas last time I was like, ‘I have no idea how to approach this.’ This time I feel like I get how to approach it and how to tell [the] story.”
The showrunner added, “If one of the Originals is going to be leaving I want to give them the beautiful exit they deserve. I don’t want to keep guessing about what’s going to happen.” While Rhimes may be prepared to lose Mer and McDreamy, will the show be able to survive without them?
Either way, ABC exec Paul Lee is confident the series will continue for many years to come. During the TCA press tour last week, Lee told reporters, “[Shonda Rhimes] is planning a number of [seasons] out....We would like to see it on the network for many years to come.”
"Grey's Anatomy" season 10 premieres on Thursday, September 26 with a 2-hour episode starting at 9 p.m. on ABC.
